Chapter One

”What is that?!” Remus gulped, eyes bulging as he shifted closer to his brother.

Romulus tensed as Remus pressed against him, however he shifted forward a bit. As the older brother it was his responsibility to protect Remus. He wasn’t going to cower like a defenseless pup! He wasn’t a pup at all!

”Don’t worry Remy.” He used his nickname for Remus, hoping that that would calm him. However, Remus merely continued to tremble.

The dragging noise continued, and Romulus tried to evaluate his options...there were none though. Maybe if he screamed really loud, George would come! With how scary he was right now, maybe he’d scare away whatever beast was heading their way. He’d rather deal with a beast he knew over a beast that sounded like it was dragging something dangerous.

A deep breath was taken, prepping for that loud scream, but sudden regret hit. The stench was awful. It smelled like rotten fruit mixed with rotten eggs, mixed with that concoction that Fred let sit for four months to “fermentate”, mixed with how he’d smelled during his 4 week long stint of refusing a shower.

He gagged, eyes tearing up. ”Remus, don’t breathe!” He coughed, focusing hard on not being sick. It was awful!

”Wha---AGH!” Remus caught the scent and he visibly turned green.

”WHO DARES ENTER MY HOME?!” The voice was hoarse from a lack of use. It sounded old and gravelly. It was growing closer. ”I can smell you, you stinky little thieves. I know you’re here to steal my treasures!”

Remus squeaked. ”What treasures?!” He whispered, to Romulus. Another glance around the room showed only the water beside them, and then in the shadows towards the back of the room, a bunch of trash. Dirty socks, broken plates, torn pages from books, miscellaneous feathers, and even oddly shaped rocks.

”Romulus, do you see all of that?” Remus pointed, his voice shaking a bit, and Romulus turned, eyes widening.

”That’s treasure?!” He snorted. Likely story. However, there was nothing else in the room. His heart clenched as he realized their only option...the water.

”We’re about to get drenched aren’t we?” Remus had clearly read his mind. Romulus nodded.

The boys dove into the water and swam deeper into it. Just in time too!

”I will not give my treasures to you!” The beast broke into the room with a loud screech.

It was a giant rat. Scars littered it’s body. It was the size of the largest Divine! Giant teeth protruded from it’s agape mouth. It’s tail was long, lashing violently, and the scratching made sense. Wrapped around its tail was a set of chains. But the most eerie thing was its eyes. Stark white.

”I will destroy yooooou!” The rats form spun, tail lashing wildly. It was then that the boys realized the rat could not see them. It was blind! They were safe, they merely had to wait for it to realize no one was there and leave.

The rat thrashed, shrieking. It was clear that the beast was angry.

”Where are you little thieves! What are you, them pesky raccoons?! I told your King! These are my treasures!” Its words echoed in the room.

The boys gulped. The last thing they wanted to get involved in was a war between this rat beast and the raccoons...that was too messy, even for their liking.

The rat stopped spinning, it’s nose rising to the air, sniffing hard. It was clear that it came up with nothing though as the beast murmured to itself. ”I know I wasn’t wrong...there’s a faint scent but it’s gone.”

Remus watched, eyes widening. The water was masking their scent! Only their heads were poking out of the water. Sudden relief flooded, and his mind began to work again. Below them a light glowed, and Remus quietly dove down, following the light.

The air in his lungs fled quickly, but as soon as he found the source of the light, and his lungs felt as though they were going to burst, he gasped for air, aiming for the surface, only to realize...he could breathe?

He broke the surface, and Romulus turned towards him. Remus could see the question in his gaze.

He pointed down with his paw, and motioned for Romulus to follow him.

Then he dove deep.

Now that he knew he could breathe he found the swim easier, and soon Romulus caught on too. The light was a bunch of iridescent fish, releasing light from their scales.

They marked a long, underwater cavern, and the boys began to follow it.

Soon the boys came up beside one another. It was Romulus who grew brave enough to try to talk. ”H-” He frowned...the sound had came out and no water had gone in. ”How are we breathing? Why can I talk?”

So many questions! Remus shrugged, grinning. ”Believe in the unexplained and it shall reward you.”

Romulus rolled his eyes at his brother's positivity.

They soon came to a crossroads. Three different caverns! ”Which do we choose mister believe in the unexplained?” Romulus teased, grinning at Remus.

He eyed the three tunnels. The first was completely dark, around the wall separating it from the other tunnels were a lot of barnacles. The second had coral shooting out from the crevices in the rocks of the tunnel. The third was the most shattered. Underwater plants of all kinds and colors shot out from the cracks. Which route should the boys choose?

WHAT SHOULD THE BOYS DO?! Vote on the poll HERE.
